The supply and loading of transport with fuel and water in maritime transport is called bunkering. This term refers to a complex of operations for the material and technical supply of ships. After ordering the service, the fuel is delivered to the specific vehicle, transferred to the ship and loaded. Although the process resembles refueling a car, the term «refueling» is not used at sea. Here they do not refuel the transport, but take the bunker, although the result is identical: the vehicle is ready for operation.
The complex of logistics operations is carried out by a bunkering tanker, which delivers fuel and lubricants in bulk. The operations themselves are not cargo operations, since the fuel is delivered not for further transportation, but for direct use.
Types of bunkering and requirements for the bunkering machine
The place of bunkering activity is the sea, ocean, river, lake. Operations are carried out:
- from the berth: fuel is delivered to the customer’s vessel from the shore, for example, from a pipeline;
- at the pier: bunkered transport is moored to the pier;
- on the roadstead: the bunkered vehicle is anchored;
- drifting, on the move.
Bunkering machines, as a rule, have a simplified hull shape. Their speed is 11-12 knots. The requirements for the composition of fuels and lubricants are established:
- heavy fuel – 800 tons;
- oil – 67-80 t;
- light fuel – 220 tons.
Taking into account these requirements, the weight of a standard batch of fuels and lubricants is 1100 tons. The full load capacity of the bunkering truck is 1500 tons. It is important to take into account: sea transport of this type not only performs a complex of operations for the material and technical support of ships. Bunkering barges, port bunkering trucks are still used in the elimination of emergency oil spills.
